‘Unbelievable:’ Neighbors recall car flipping, then crashing into house on Western Ave
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10 ) -- Just one day after police said a 13-year-old drove a car into a house on Western Avenue, neighbors shared details about what they saw from the scene and why this is sparking larger concern across the neighborhood. Sharon was getting ready to watch Netflix and relax Sunday evening when something came "knocking" at her window. "I was sitting down talking on the phone and I look over to my right where my window is, and I see what I couldn't believe. I see a car in the air flipping, coming towards me," said Sharon. "I wasn't sure if I was really seeing it, it was unbelievable. The closer it got, I realized, this car is going to crash into this house." Sharon said when the car hit her home around 6:30 p.m. on Mother's Day, the window blew in. Albany police said a 13-year-old was recklessly driving a car on Western Avenue, that was filled with five other juveniles, ranging in age between 13 and 15. Officers found that the 13-year-old lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times before coming to a rest in front of Sharon's house. As this all unfolded, Sharon told NEWS10's Vanessa Blasi that she ran outside to try and help. "This is when I see a young lady in the bushes outside of my window, and blood streaming from her head," said Sharon. According to police, a 14-year-old female who was sitting in the backseat of the car, was ejected from the car, and was thrown several feet into the air. Police said she suffered significant injuries but she is now in stable condition. The rest of the five teenagers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Sharon, who is a retired New York City first responder, said seeing that on Sunday, brought her right back to the job. However, being disabled now, she said she felt a little helpless. "I couldn't sleep. I couldn't sleep last night, my nerves were shocked," said Sharon. "It brings you to a place that, especially on Mother's Day, you don't want to be at that place." Not many other neighbors that NEW10's Vanessa Blasi spoke to, saw the crash. However, Mirielle Cadogan who lives just a few doors down, said she came running outside as soon as she noticed the sirens. "I saw the car, the car was totaled. It was very sad, I mean it was just by the grace of God the bushes were there," said Cadogan. "There was a barrage of police and detectives, and ambulances." Cadogan said she's never seen an accident of this magnitude on her street. When it happened, she immediately thought about her grandkids, who often spend many hours playing in the front lawn. "I was worried and the first thing I told my grandkids is you will no longer play out front anymore," said Cadogan. "No, never. Because this is a place where they normally take pictures and do a lot of things." Although the circumstances surrounding the crash are still unclear, other neighbors like Donna Casey believe a lesson needs to be learned. "I think the lesson is clearly that the parents have to be more present, there's no doubt about that," said Casey. "You know the devastation that it could've caused; I mean you see the damage that it caused. It could've been so much worse." Sharon's home is expected to be okay, and luckily she wasn't hurt either. Sharon spent some parts of the day Monday washing off the leftover blood stained on her porch. She said she hopes everyone is okay and that they learn to be more careful. "It has to be instilled in them that there's just certain lines you don't cross, especially lines that could not only take your life, but lives of innocent victims as well," said Sharon. When NEWS10's Vanessa Blasi asked if the 13-year-old driver will be charged, Albany police said that is still be investigated.
