UDOT reports failure of system in fatal crash
UDOT has reported that the wrong way detection system did not activate before the tragic wrong way collision on I-15 that led to the loss of two teenagers' lives. John Gleason from UDOT mentioned that the vehicle entered the freeway from the 600 S ramp, but the motion-detecting cameras of the system did not identify the car. Despite being in place for two years with 27 similar systems in Utah, there was uncertain efficacy in this instance. UDOT is conducting an investigation to understand the reasons behind the system failure and possible improvements. Jose Jimenez was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI and two counts of automobile homicide following the accident, which claimed the lives of Anneka Wilson and Leo Shepherd. While the community has come together to support the victims' families through a GoFundMe campaign, UDOT is also exploring areas of concern like camera blind spots and calibration to enhance the system's reliability in detecting wrong way drivers.
