Two people convicted for fatal Avondale drag racing accident

Two young drivers from the Valley have been given a seven-year prison sentence each for their involvement in a fatal street-racing collision in Avondale in May 2021. Jakari Barksdale and Emanuel Cervantez, who were both 17 years old at the time of the incident, were driving at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour when Barksdale crashed into a pickup truck at the intersection of Avondale Boulevard and Broadway Road, resulting in the death of the truck driver. The Maricopa County Attorney's Office stated that the race was organized through text messages and recorded by onlookers. Barksdale and Cervantez faced adult charges, with Barksdale pleading guilty to manslaughter and aggravated assault, and Cervantez pleading guilty to manslaughter and hit-and-run. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell emphasized that the tragedy was the outcome of dangerous decisions and a lack of concern for human life.
