Two killed, two hospitalized after wrong-way crash on I-43

PORT WASHINGTON, Wis. (WFRV) – A wrong-way crash on Interstate 43 early Monday morning left two people dead and two others hospitalized, according to the Ozaukee County Sheriff's Office. Deputies received several 911 calls around 12:45 a.m. reporting a vehicle heading south in the northbound lanes near Jay Road in the Town of Belgium. Minutes later, that vehicle collided with an SUV traveling northbound on I-43, just north of County Highway H in the Town of Port Washington. The wrong-way driver, a 34-year-old Milwaukee man, was the sole occupant of his vehicle. He was extricated and transported to a nearby hospital before being transferred by medical helicopter to another facility. He remains in critical condition. The SUV was driven by a 51-year-old Oostburg woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A 56-year-old Oostburg man riding in the front passenger seat was also pronounced dead at the scene. A 22-year-old Oostburg woman in the back seat was extricated and taken to a nearby hospital. Authorities say it’s currently unknown if alcohol or drugs were involved. The names of those involved are being withheld as the investigation continues. Northbound lanes of I-43 were closed for about five hours during the crash investigation. No further information has been released at this time.
