Troopers report 843 crashes, 399 DUI arrests over Memorial Day weekend; 5 fatalities

Pennsylvania State Police reported more than 100 injuries and five deaths as more than 800 crashes were reported during Memorial Day weekend enforcement. As part of Gov. Josh Shapiro's efforts to bolster roadway safety, PSP released its holiday weekend enforcement detail, and a staggering number of DUIs were reported. Across the 843 crashes over the holiday weekend, 129 people were injured, and 399 drivers were charged with driving while impaired. While those numbers are staggering, there is still room for optimism as data show a consistent decrease from the previous year, with an uptick only recorded in DUI-related crashes and the number of seatbelt citations issued. In addition to several crashes and DUI arrest reports, troopers issued more than 6,500 citations, including nearly 1,100 for failing to wear a seatbelt and 110 for not properly securing child safety seats. It's worth noting that the data shown above is only reflective of PSP investigated incidents and does not include data from other law enforcement agencies. Shapiro's 2026-2027 proposed budget continues to aid state police in its mission to prevent crashes and save lives by requesting a $16.2 million investment to support four additional cadet classes and roughly 380 more troopers. Since taking over as governor, 626 cadets have graduated and joined the ranks of PSP, thanks in part to Shapiro eliminating college credit requirements to serve.
