Toddler dies, 2nd child injured after pair hit by car in Cumberland County in Gray’s Creek community

GRAY'S CREEK, N.C. (WNCN) -- One child died, and another was seriously injured when they were hit by a car in a Cumberland County neighborhood on Thursday, officials said. The crash happened just before noon in the 4000 block of Mena Drive in the Gray's Creek Mobile Home Community near the N.C. 87/Sand Hill Road intersection, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office. "The preliminary investigation revealed a motor vehicle went left of center and struck two juveniles that were in a toy car being pulled by their parents," said a sheriff's office news release, while troopers earlier said the children were in an electric toy car. An 18-year-old man driving a white Dodge Avenger came around a corner, "went left of center and struck two juveniles," deputies said. The two children were airlifted to an area hospital for treatment. The 2-year-old child later died at a hospital, while the older child was seriously injured. Immediately after the wreck, the Dodge driver swerved, with part of the car stopped off the road, troopers said. After the crash, the driver of the Dodge remained at the scene, which is south of Fayetteville, about two blocks from the Grays Creek Fire Department. The Fayetteville man driving was later taken to a medical facility for treatment, deputies said. "Charges are pending in this case. Additional details will be released as soon as they become available," the news release said. Deputies said anyone who has any information about the case should contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol and the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are investigating the wreck.
