TIMELINE: Deadly stolen minivan crash on Erie Boulevard West in Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- 911 dispatch audio and information from the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office help piece together the final minutes before a deadly crash involving a stolen minivan on Erie Boulevard West on Feb. 3. According to police, the incidents unfolded early Tuesday morning. Syracuse Police spot a grey minivan believed to be stolen and radio dispatch, officers then confirm the vehicle was stolen. Police report that a minivan near Grand Avenue and Cadwell Street is attempting to elude a traffic stop. Just a minute later, officers say the minivan is pulling over. Officers then report that the grey minivan is fleeing from the traffic stop. Seconds later, dispatchers notify the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office, telling deputies that the vehicle is stolen and the driver has fled. Sheriff's deputies say they see the minivan on Avery Avenue, just off of West Genesee Street, but never fully catch up to the stolen vehicle. That's when 911 dispatch audio tracks the vehicle heading east on West Genesee Street before it turns onto Erie Boulevard West. "When the car makes the turn onto Erie Boulevard, our deputies are not on Erie Boulevard. As they're turning onto Erie Boulevard, if you go on that section of Erie, there are curves in the road, it's at a slant," Sheriff Toby Shelley said. The vehicle crashes into a telephone pole. Dispatch audio confirms an ejection and that the other person remained inside the vehicle. Police said the 31-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 22-year-old female passenger was ejected and taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Shelley also confirmed that the driver, Taijon Williams, had outstanding warrants and a criminal history, which he said may explain why the driver fled. "It's just speculation on my part, but he has those warrants, and he didn't want the police to get him and arrest him on those warrants, and he's in a stolen car."
