Tiger Woods told police he was looking at his phone before crash

(NewsNation) — Golfer Tiger Woods told police he was looking at his phone and didn't realize the car in front of him had slowed before his rollover crash, according to court documents obtained by NewsNation Tuesday. Woods was arrested Friday afternoon for a DUI and released on bail that same night after his Land Rover crossed lanes, clipped a Ford truck and partially rolled over in Florida, his second DUI arrest and fourth car crash in the public eye. No one was injured. When the truck in front of him tried to make a right turn, Woods moved into the oncoming traffic lane — and hit the truck on his way. The golfer's car “lost control and flipped” after the impact, according to the affidavit. While Woods explained the accident happened because he'd been on his phone and changing the radio station, officers on the scene reported "several signs of impairment," including profuse sweating and lethargic movements, despite being extremely alert. "Once Woods removed his sunglasses, I observed his eyes to be bloodshot and glassy, Iobserved his pupils to be extremely dilated. I asked Woods if he consumed any type of alcoholicbeverage to drink today to which he stated, 'none,'" the responding officer wrote. Woods confirmed he'd taken some prescription medication, but he maintained he had not consumed any illegal substances. "While speaking to Woods, I observed him to be extremely alert and talkative," the officer continued. "Woods had hiccups during the entire investigation." Martin County Sheriff John Budensiek said Woods, 50, did not register any alcohol on a Breathalyzer test but refused to submit a urinalysis test. Officers did find two Hydrocone pills in Woods' pants pocket, per the affidavit. Police charged Woods for a DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, the sheriff said.
