Teen seriously injured in fall from horse-drawn carriage in Central Park: authorities
MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A teen is in critical condition after he fell from a horse-drawn carriage in Central Park on Wednesday afternoon, according to authorities. The incident took place around 2:47 p.m. at Cherry Hill near 72nd Street and West Side Drive. The horse- drawn carriage with passengers in the cab broke free and bolted down West Drive and collided with another carriage. The carriage then flipped over near Tavern on the Green, according to Central Park Conservancy. The horse apparently got spooked, according to sources. It remains unclear why the horse was scared. The 18-year-old male who fell from the carriage was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, according to sources. "It just sucks, said Tiffany Thomas, a resident from the Upper West Side who spoke to PIX11 News. "I hope they're okay. It's another incident with the horse, and this time someone was injured. I hope they approve some type of ban and the people are okay." This is the eighth horse-related incident in Central Park over the past thirteen months, according to the conservancy. This recent horse-drawn carriage incident comes on the heels of Deniz's death, a horse who apparently ate a poisonous plant from the Park. In May, a horse carriage also overturned. PIX11 News reached out to TWU Local 100, the union that represents hundreds of horse-drawn carriage drivers and owners, but it was not immediately available to comment.
