Teen in Southern California regains ability to walk after diving incident.

A 15-year-old teen from Long Beach who was paralyzed in a diving incident is set to leave the hospital following a tremendous recovery. Alessandro Apuzzo, also known as “Sandro”, had a life-changing accident while at the beach on July 4. Despite a sudden impact to his head from diving into the ocean, causing serious spinal cord injuries, he is now preparing to return home after several months of intensive rehabilitation. Sandro, a talented water polo player who was on the verge of starting high school, remained determined throughout his recovery journey. He has amazed his loved ones, doctors, and therapists with his unwavering dedication to regaining his mobility. Sandro's father, Jose Santos Loria Garcia, shared his gratitude for his son's exceptional progress and perseverance. The young athlete's final steps out of the hospital were met with cheers and support from the community, marking a significant milestone in his recovery just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. Sandro expressed immense appreciation for the hospital staff and his loved ones who stood by him through his journey to recovery, stating, “There's too much to be thankful for - all the people here, my family, and my friends." Looking forward, Sandro is eager to return to his passion for being in the water, aimed at resuming activities like surfing and bodyboarding.
