Teen driver sentenced for fatal crash in Grosse Pointe Farms
A 16-year-old boy involved in a fatal crash in Grosse Pointe Farms that resulted in the death of his friend was sentenced to 19-38 months in the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility, with the possibility of transitioning to adult sentencing if he violates his juvenile sentence. The crash occurred when the boy, Kiernan Tague, was driving at over 100 mph in a 25 mph zone, resulting in the death of his 18-year-old passenger, Flynn Mackrell. Initially charged with second-degree murder, Tague pleaded guilty to manslaughter with a motor vehicle. The judge had the option to impose either a juvenile or an adult sentence, and ultimately decided on a blended sentence. Although there were calls for Tague's mother to be charged for her alleged knowledge of her son's reckless driving, no charges were filed. During the sentencing, family members of the victim shared emotional statements, expressing the profound impact of their loss and advocating for an adult sentence for Tague. Tague's lawyer argued against an adult sentence, citing the still-developing brains of teenagers and emphasizing her client's progress towards rehabilitation. Tague also expressed remorse for the tragedy, highlighting the deep sorrow and regret he feels.
