Teen driver in Oakland fatal crash charged with manslaughter

OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) -- Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson gave an update Wednesday on the fatal crash that happened in Oakland Saturday night. DA Dickson says the 17-year-old arrested has been formally charged with manslaughter. Three people were killed in the crash and seven others were injured. Dickson says one person is still in critical condition. “As I see the charges right now, there are at least ten victims,” said Dickson. “Those charges range from charges relating to the death of individuals or injury and hit and run.” The victims in a deadly crash in East Oakland on Saturday night have been identified. On Tuesday, the Alameda County Coroner’s Office identified the three people killed as: The fatal crash occurred in the area of 85th Avenue and International Boulevard. According to the Oakland Police Department, the driver was headed north on 85th Avenue at a high rate of speed and attempted to turn left on International Boulevard. The 17-year-old tried to flee the scene, according to officers, but was restrained by Good Samaritans. He was taken to the hospital and then later arrested. “We were all grieving,” said Dickson. “This is a terrible tragedy and I can’t even imagine folks who were are close to the individuals who were lost on this evening what they are going through.” Surveillance camera from the scene showed the suspect vehicle mounting the sidewalk as a woman jumps into her vehicle, narrowly escaping being hit. Dickson says that the 17-year-old made his first court appearance Wednesday afternoon at the Alameda County Juvenile Justice Center. She also says that because one of the victims is in critical condition, the outcome of their progress could result in an amendment of charges.
