Taos County Sergeant dies in an on-duty crash

A Taos County Sheriff's Office Sergeant has died after an on-duty crash involving TCSO deputies on Friday.A spokesperson for New Mexico State Police says TCSO Sgt. Joseph Apodaca was killed when he collided with a TCSO deputy on State Road 518. The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. Friday.According to NMSP, Sgt. Apodaca was trying to find a reckless driver, as he turned his police motorcycle onto a dirt driveway near the 7200 block of State Road 518. As he was attempting to make the turn, Sgt. Apodaca collided with a marked TCSO pickup truck.The Office of the Medical Investigator pronounced Sgt. Apodaca dead at 11:44 p.m. Friday."Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Sergeant Joseph Apodaca, who dedicated his life to serving and protecting the people of Taos County," said NMSP Chief Matthew Broom in a statement. "This tragedy is felt across the entire law community, and we stand alongside the men and women of the Taos County Sheriff's Office during this incredibly difficult time."
