State Rep. Wendell Gilliard discharged from hospital after multi-vehicle collision on I-26.
South Carolina State Representative Wendell Gilliard (D) is now recovering at his residence after being part of a multiple-vehicle collision on the highway earlier this week, as per information from his office. The incident occurred as Gilliard was returning home from Columbia on I-26 when his car was hit near Exit 177 by another vehicle trying to avoid an obstacle ahead. Fortunately, his vehicle was stopped by a safety barrier after being pushed onto the median strip, keeping it from entering oncoming traffic. Following treatment at a nearby hospital, he has been discharged and is presently in stable condition, according to a senior advisor. A news release on Thursday expressed Gilliard's concern for all those affected and requested the public to join him in thoughts and prayers for everyone involved. The statement also conveyed his and his family's gratitude for the support and well wishes received. Investigation into the crash is ongoing. Gilliard represents District 111 in the South Carolina House, encompassing parts of downtown Charleston, North Charleston, and West Ashley, where lawmakers recently gathered to approve the state's $14.7 billion budget plan.
