Skydiver dies after midair collision with fellow jumper in Washington
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A man who went was skydiving in Washington has died after colliding with another skydiver in midair and becoming incapacitated, according to authorities in the state. The Adams County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash, which occurred on May 24 during a scheduled 11-person group jump at the West Plains Skydiving facility in the city of Ritzville. Officials identified the man killed in the collision as Randy Hubbs of the Kennewick area. The other skydiver, who was injured, is identified as Nicole Klein of Colville. “Preliminary findings indicate an in-flight collision occurred between the two skydivers during descent,” ACSO said. “Following the collision, Randy Hubbs reportedly became incapacitated and was no longer in control of his parachute canopy.” Staff said Hubbs was 500 feet above ground when he drifted north and away from the designated drop zone. Witnesses said he was “unresponsive, with his head and arms down, before disappearing beyond a hill northeast.” Weather was not believed to be a factor in the crash. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the sheriff's office.
