Serious crash closes all lanes of Bobby Jones between Deans Bridge Rd, Gordon Hwy
UPDATE, 1:18 P.M. - According to authorities, troopers were requested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office to assist with a crash investigation involving serious injuries. Upon investigation, it was revealed that a RCSO deputy was pursuing a stolen vehicle that fled down a dead end on Old McDuffie Road before leaving the roadway, traveling through a wood line, and going down an embankment into a concrete drainage ditch on the right shoulder of eastbound Bobby Jones Expressway at mile marker 4.2. According to investigators, the deputy conducted a felony stop, at which time the suspect exited the vehicle and ran north across the eastbound lanes of Bobby Jones Expressway. Authorities say the suspect was struck by a box truck, which caused him to become airborne and strike the windshield of a Tesla, and the impact then caused the suspect to be thrown over the center median concrete wall, where he landed in the left lane of westbound Bobby Jones Expressway at mile marker 4.2. According to authorities, the suspect was transported and is currently receiving medical treatment. The roadway was closed for approximately closed for two hours, but all lanes of Bobby Jones Expressway have been re-opened. #UPDATE, 10:32am - According to our crew at the scene, law enforcement is opening all lanes of I-520. #UPDATE, 9:53 am - The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) is shutting down both east and westbound lanes of Bobby Jones Expressway, between Deans Bridge Road and Gordon Highway while they conduct their investigation. The community is asked to seek alternative routes until the lanes of travel are open again. As of this update, the coroner HAS NOT been called to the scene. AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) - The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is currently on the scene of a serious crash on Bobby Jones Expressway at mile marker four, between Deans Bridge Road and Gordon Highway. Two lanes eastbound and one lane westbound are now open. The Georgia State Patrol and the Georgia Motor Carrier Compliance Division (MCCD) are currently en route to handle the accident investigation. Law enforcement asks that motorists use caution and avoid this area if possible until the roadway can be reopened for normal travel.
