Safety recommendations for US-89 following fatal bus accident near Ephraim
New information has come to light regarding the tragic accident near Ephraim and Mt. Pleasant, Utah, which occurred on Friday night. Melvin Scott Beckstead, also known as “Scooter,” aged 43, was traveling on US-89 when he crossed into the opposite lane where two buses from Wasatch Academy were transporting students and faculty. One bus was minimally affected, but the second bus was struck head-on, resulting in Beckstead's death on the scene. Utah Highway Patrol confirmed that fatigued driving played a role in the crash. Despite twenty people from the second bus requiring hospitalization, all students have been discharged, and one teacher remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition. UHP shared crash statistics on US-89 in Sanpete County, emphasizing the road's hazardous nature. While considerations for medians were discussed with the Utah Department of Transportation, the road's length made it impractical. UHP highlighted the importance of safe driving practices, like staying alert, eliminating distractions, and using high beams on dark, unlit roads. Factors contributing to accidents in previous years included speed, seat belt use, impaired and distracted driving, and fatigued driving. Wasatch Academy will continue to support students with mental health resources, and on-campus activities will follow regular schedules. The family of Melvin Scott Beckstead has not responded to requests for comment.
