Rock climbing accident claims 3 lives in North Cascades
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) – A rock climbing accident killed three in the North Cascades. The accident took place in the North Early Winters Spire, not far from Mazama, a busy area for rock climbers. Local officials say a group of four climbers fell while descending a gully. “The majority of counties in Washington do not have those resources, so we get asked to help quite a bit in other places, it's what we train for whether the people are alive or deceased,” Yana Radenska with the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office said. The surviving climber, who has not been publicly identified, extricated himself from a tangle of ropes, helmets and other equipment after the accident and made the trek despite suffering internal bleeding and head trauma, Okanogan County Undersheriff Dave Yarnell said. The AP contributed to this story.
