REP MIKE COLLINS: Fake car accidents endanger us all. Congress and DOJ must act
In 2020, Cornelius Garrison was tragically killed in New Orleans after assisting federal authorities in investigating an insurance fraud scheme involving staged car crashes. Garrison played a significant role in orchestrating these accidents, with participants intentionally colliding with trucks in order to file false lawsuits and claim settlements. As a result of his cooperation, he ultimately lost his life. The U.S. Department of Justice recently indicted nine defendants involved in this particular scheme, part of a wider probe that has seen over 63 individuals charged in staged car crashes across the New Orleans area. Similar fraudulent tactics are being seen in cities nationwide, leading to significant financial losses and safety risks for drivers. In response to this growing issue, a group of U.S. representatives, including Rep. Mike Collins, have called for the creation of a federal task force to investigate and prosecute these criminal networks, urging swift action from the Trump administration. These staged accidents not only impact insurance premiums but also undermine the rule of law and pose dangers on the roads. Implementing stricter laws and penalties, such as the proposed "Staged Accident Fraud Prevention Act," could help curb this widespread fraud, providing relief to consumers, small trucking operators, and rideshare passengers. Various industry organizations, including the American Trucking Association and Uber, have voiced their support for these efforts, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in combating staged-accident fraud. To address this pressing issue, it is crucial for the Department of Justice to launch the proposed task force and for Congress to pass legislation that can effectively deter and punish those involved in these fraudulent activities.
