Raleigh-area crashes close lanes, snarl I-40 and US 1 traffic

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) -- Two crashes in the Raleigh area, about a mile apart and within three minutes, caused traffic problems for more than an hour early Saturday evening. One crash happened just before 6 p.m. in Raleigh along Interstate 40 heading east near mile marker 295 and Gorman Street, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The crash involved an SUV that flipped but landed on its wheels. Images from the crash scene showed the SUV near the center concrete divider. The Raleigh Police Department said there were no serious injuries in the wreck. The two left lanes were blocked until 7 p.m. because of the crash. A crash just three minutes earlier happened along U.S. 1 northbound near Walnut Street -- just south of the interchange with I-40, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation. Images from the scene of the crash indicated a three-vehicle pile-up with drivers hitting cars from behind. An RV camper and two other cars were involved in the wreck, according to NCDOT cameras. The wreck near mile marker 101 closed the three center lanes until just after 7 p.m.
