Postal worker pinned under vehicle after Route 109 crash with pickup
A section of Route 109 in Medway, Massachusetts, was closed for hours Friday, after a serious crash that left a U.S. Postal worker pinned under her vehicle. The crash happened at 11:21 a.m. near the intersection of Route 109 and Coffee Street. Route 109, which is Main Street, was closed to traffic between Oakland and Holliston streets. From Sky5, a postal truck could be seen on its side off a driveway with a red Chevy Silverado nearby. The postal truck had visible rear damage and the truck had heavy front-end damage. The postal worker was ejected in the crash and pinned under her vehicle, police said. "She was communicating with us. She was able to recite her dog’s name. The nurse that was there was trying to keep her talking," said Robert Smith."We're thankful they were here to comfort the patient and the driver of the other vehicle," said Medway fire Chief Michael Fasolino.Good Samaritans attempted to lift the truck off her before emergency responders arrived."A lot of us were trying to pick the vehicle up off of her – there were probably 10 or 15 people there trying to take the vehicle off of her. Unfortunately, it was just too heavy. We were unable to," Smith said. The postal worker was airlifted to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester with what appeared to be serious injuries, police said. The driver of the red pickup truck was also taken to UMass Memorial Medical Center for evaluation. Fasolino said both had "moderate injuries." Both were in stable condition late Friday afternoon.Police have not identified the driver or said whether they will face charges. Police said speed does not appear to have been a factor in the crash."Main Street is constantly busy, no matter what time of day," Fasolino said. The mail the postal worker was carrying was picked up by USPS. "We appreciate the quick actions of emergency responders for coming to the aid of our carrier involved in a vehicle accident today," the USPS said in a statement. "Due to privacy concerns, the Postal Service does not discuss employee medical or health conditions."The crash remains under investigation.
