Peoria teenager charged with aggravated DUI in fatal accident
In Peoria, Illinois, a 17-year-old male from Central Peoria is facing the possibility of up to 14 years in prison for allegedly causing a collision that resulted in the death of a 25-year-old man from East Peoria earlier this year. Cedric D. Kennedy is accused of being under the influence of cannabis at the time of the incident. Kennedy is facing a single charge of aggravated DUI, which was issued by a Peoria County grand jury. The collision, which occurred on March 22, involved Kennedy's 2007 Cadillac and the victim's motorcycle. Kennedy is alleged to have had at least 5 nanograms of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabionol in his blood at the time of the collision. Despite being a minor and unlicensed driver, Kennedy ran a stop sign, striking the motorcycle and causing the victim to fall off and be struck by another vehicle, resulting in his death. While probation is a potential option for Kennedy, the burden to avoid prison time is on him, meaning he must provide "extraordinary circumstances" to justify not being incarcerated.
