Pedestrian killed after truck veers onto sidewalk, crashes into parking lot

Metro Nashville Police say that a pedestrian was killed when a truck drove onto a sidewalk and through a fence into a parking lot Tuesday evening. MNPD arrested Antwaun McBee in connection with a deadly pedestrian crash. An affidavit from MNPD details the deadly crash. Police responded to the 400 block of Woodland Street just before 4 p.m. Tuesday after receiving a report that a truck had hit a pedestrian and several parked vehicles. Officers arrived to find a pedestrian had been pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. During a preliminary investigation officers spoke with a witness who told them that he had witnessed a black Ford truck speeding on Woodland Street toward Interstate Drive. The witness said that the truck was accelerating when it suddenly swerved into the other side of the street. The truck continued to drive on the wrong side of the street until the witness said it drove onto the sidewalk and crashed into the fence of a parking lot at 417 Woodland Street. Police say that the investigation indicates the pedestrian was hit while on the sidewalk when the truck left the road. The Ford truck came to a stop after crashing through a fence and into a parking lot, striking several parked vehicles. An officer on scene reported smelling marijuana inside the truck. McBee was asked to perform a standard field sobriety test by officers, but they say he refused. The defendant did consent to having his blood drawn. When officers interviewed Antwaun McBee, he confirmed that he had driven the Ford. He told them that he hadn't had any alcohol but that he had smoked marijuana an hour before the crash. He told authorities that he took medication for seizures, but they say he could not remember the name of the medication nor his diagnosis. The defendant said he could only remember he had been driving on Woodland Street on his way home from meeting with a friend. The defendant said he woke up when the fire department extracted him from his truck. He said he was in the driver's seat wearing his seatbelt when he was helped by the fire department. McBee was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, intoxication and driving on a suspended license. His bond was set at $75,000.
