Pedestrian dies after driver takes brief stop at Madera stop sign

MADERA, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A 66-year-old died after being hit by a vehicle that stopped briefly at a stop sign in Madera Saturday evening, the Madera Police Department announced. Police say around 6:50 p.m., they responded to Vineyard Avenue and 6th Street for a report of a person who was hit by a vehicle. Investigators reported a driver was headed east on 6th Street when they briefly stopped at the stop sign at Vineyard Avenue. The driver continued through the intersection as a pedestrian was walking north in the west crosswalk. Officers say life-saving measures were provided, but the victim was ultimately pronounced dead at scene. The 66-year-old was identified as a resident of Madera. Detectives say the driver remained on scene and is cooperative with the investigation.
