OSHP investigating fatal traffic crash
PIQUA, Ohio (WKEF) -- On Saturday, a crash on Interstate 75 northbound left one dead. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, troopers at the scene determined a 2010 Freightliner tractor-trailer had pulled over onto the right shoulder in a construction zone due to a mechanical issue. The vehicle was out of the traffic lanes. Several minutes after the Freightliner had been stopped and pulled off the road, a 2005 Chevrolet Impala struck it from behind. The Impala had been traveling northbound and had driven out of its lane and into the construction zone. The driver of the Freightliner, 43-year-old Derek Blakely, was not injured. The driver of the Chevrolet, 21-year-old Yukahn Riffel, however, was pronounced dead as a result of the crash. Troopers from the Piqua Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol were assisted on scene by the Troy Police Department, Troy Fire and EMS, and Dick Lumpkin's Towing. The crash remains under investigation.
