NHP identifies four victims in Elko County US 93 collision

Four people were killed and multiple others hospitalized following a head-on collision on US93 in Elko County on Monday morning, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The crash occurred at approximately 11:37 a.m. near mile marker 79, about five miles north of Wells. Investigators say a gray Honda Odyssey minivan was traveling southbound when the driver crossed over the centerline to pass an unrelated vehicle and lost control. At the same time, a white Toyota Tacoma pickup was traveling northbound. The driver of the Toyota steered right in an attempt to avoid a collision, but the right front of the Honda struck the left front of the Toyota. The impact caused the Honda to rotate and come to rest in the roadway, while the Toyota ran off the right shoulder and rolled onto its passenger side. Three occupants of the Honda and one occupant of the Toyota sustained fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Honda was identified as 44-year-old Nazia Salma. The two passengers in the vehicle were identified as 19-year-old Nihaa Shaik and a 13-year-old male juvenile. All three were from Union City, California. The passenger in the Toyota was identified as 23-year-old Sophia Weiniger of San Diego, California. The remaining occupants from both vehicles were transported to area hospitals and remain in critical condition. The crash remains under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol Major Incident Reconstruction Team (MIRT).
