New female crash test dummy unveiled for federal safety testing

The U.S. Department of Transportation has unveiled a new female crash dummy to enhance safety measures specifically for women, as they are at a higher risk of injury in car accidents compared to men. The previous crash dummy model was primarily based on male proportions, but this new dummy, named THOR-05F, features female-specific proportions to mirror human anatomy more accurately. This advancement in technology has the potential to replace the current Hybrid III dummy used in crash testing. Women are statistically more vulnerable in car crashes, with a higher likelihood of injury and fatality compared to men. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to consider implementing the THOR-05F dummy in government crash test ratings once a final rule is in place. The new dummy, equipped with over 150 sensors, has been developed to better reflect the anatomical differences between men and women, including the neck, collarbone, pelvis, and legs, improving the accuracy of crash testing. While some American automakers have expressed doubts about the new model, advocacy groups and lawmakers like Sens. Deb Fischer and Tammy Duckworth have welcomed this initiative as a step forward in promoting road safety for all individuals.
