MS deputy injured after crash with stolen Memphis car
SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — A man told police he found his stolen car, leading to a police pursuit that crossed state lines and injured a DeSoto County deputy on Tuesday. The stolen car was later recovered in Memphis, but no one was inside, police said. Around 11:49 a.m., Memphis police officers responded to a reckless driver call in the area of Winchester Road and Lamar Avenue. A man told police that he had located his stolen vehicle after it had been stolen from a Parkway Village neighborhood. Inside were at least two suspects who had fired gunshots at him. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, they said the driver refused, and they lost sight of it. The vehicle was later found unoccupied in the 5200 block of Zodiac Road in the airport area. Southaven Police said the chase briefly crossed into that city before returning to Memphis. A spokesperson with DCSO says a detective wasn't initially involved in the chase but saw MPD officers chasing that stolen Dodge Charger, went to assist, and a black Lexus SUV pulled in front of him. The detective suffered a broken wrist but will be fine. Getwell Road was shut down in both directions near Snowden Grove shortly after noon. When WREG arrived, wreckers were hauling away cars, and Southaven police vehicles were parked in the street. WREG spoke with the grandfather of the 21-year-old victim, who initially had his car stolen this morning. He hopes those responsible are held accountable. "Stuff like this, you know what I'm saying, in the community in which you stay, I mean, you're upset about it. Because when it wind down to, gunfire, someone could've been killed," said the grandfather. Police have not given a physical description of the two suspects accused of stealing the car.
