Monroe County crash leaves 1 dead, 2 others injured

MONROE COUNTY, Ind. — One person was killed and two others were injured in a crash in Monroe County on Saturday. According to a press release from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to the intersection of State Road 46 and Hunter Valley Road around 2:28 p.m. to investigate a crash. When police arrived at the scene, they located three vehicles that had been involved in crash — a white 2007 Mercury Milan, a gray 2025 Buick Enclave and a 2025 Mercedes-Benz. During their investigation, police determined the driver of the Mercury was travelling eastbound on State Road 46 before the crash. The crash happened when the driver of the Mercury crossed State Road 46's grass median and began driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of the roadway. The driver of the Mercury crashed into the Buick while travelling eastbound on State Road 46 westbound. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was near the Buick at the time of the crash and ultimately could not avoid a collision with the Buick and Mercury. MCSO confirmed that the Mercury's driver was transported from the scene to a hospital in Bloomington after the crash. The Mercury's driver was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Buick's driver was also transported to a local medical facility because they suffered multiple broken bones during the crash. MCSO reported that the Mercedes-Benz's driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. Per MCSO, State Road 46 was shut down at Hunter Valley Road while deputies cleaned up and investigated the crash. As of 6:30 p.m. Saturday, the Monroe County Coroner's Office was working to contact the Mercury driver's family and notify them of their death. Because the coroner has not yet contacted the Mercury driver's family, the decedent's name has not been publicly released.
