Medical emergency led to fatal Asheville crash, police say
ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WSPA) -- The Asheville Police Department has completed its investigation into a fatal South Asheville collision that occurred on Tuesday, May 26. Police will not file charges in the incident, which resulted in the death of one driver. The incident happened around 3:37 p.m. at the 2160 block of Hendersonville Road. A preliminary investigation indicated that 81-year-old Peter Tracy Gillette, operating a 2018 Subaru traveling south, experienced a medical emergency. Gillette's vehicle then failed to stop for a steady red traffic signal and collided with a 2014 Nissan that had a steady green light and was attempting to turn left to travel northbound on Hendersonville Road. Gillette was the driver of the 2018 Subaru. He was unconscious following the collision and was transported to Mission Hospital. He later succumbed to his injuries on May 29. The occupants of the 2014 Nissan were also transported to Mission Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Following the completion of the investigation into the collision and the death of the driver, the Asheville Police Department stated no charges would be filed.
