Mass. man accused of killing coworker then RI couple in fiery crash

A 28-year-old Massachusetts man is accused of killing three people, including fatally shooting a coworker and a Rhode Island couple in a fiery, violent crash. The fatal shooting happened Thursday night in Cranston, Rhode Island, and the crash happened early Friday morning on Route 6 in Swansea, Massachusetts. Investigators said Demitri Sousa, of Seekonk, crashed into an SUV, killing a man and a woman from Bristol, Rhode Island, while fleeing from authorities. Swansea police officers said they saw a white Infiniti G37 drive past them at a very high rate of speed westbound on Route 6 at 12:18 a.m. Moments later, officers saw that the car had crashed into the side of another vehicle, a blue 2022 Subaru Ascent that had been traveling southbound on Route 136.The SUV that was struck was fully engulfed in flames. First responders and bystanders tried to extinguish the fire, but both occupants — a man and a woman — were pronounced dead at the scene. Before the crash, Sousa was running from police after he killed another man in Cranston, investigators said. According to Cranston police, Sousa and the shooting victim worked together at a cellphone store and had an argument about the victim's girlfriend. Police said Sousa showed up at the victim's house, knocked on the door and shot Javon Lawson, 35, several times through the door, killing him."The girlfriend is the girlfriend of the victim, and my understanding is the suspect might have worked with this individual, the suspect, and had some feelings toward, and it caused, obviously, conflict between the two men that were involved," said Cranston Police Chief Col. Michael Winquist. Sousa was at Rhode Island Hospital suffering from several broken bones from the crash, but is expected to survive. Sousa is facing a murder charge in Rhode Island and could also possibly face more charges in Massachusetts. The identities of the couple who died in the car crash have not been released.
