Man missing in tubing accident identified through body found in Elkhorn Creek

UPDATE: As of June 9 at 5:30 p.m., officials have confirmed that the body found in Elkhorn Creek on Monday belongs to 25-year-old Michael Looby. Looby was declared dead at 1:30 p.m. on Monday after his fiance reported that their tubing excursion near Still Waters campground went awry, resulting in the tube overturning. While four individuals managed to make it to safety, Looby tragically went underwater. In a previous update at 1 p.m. on June 9, LEX 18 reported that the coroner was present at the scene of a tubing accident where a man went missing when their tube flipped due to strong currents over the weekend. Additional details on the search efforts are pending. The original account revealed that on Sunday afternoon, a search was initiated for a man who disappeared underwater while tubing on Elkhorn Creek in Franklin County a day earlier, as relayed by his fiance to LEX 18. Five people were tubing near Still Waters campground when the incident occurred. While four people were rescued, Looby went under the water. Kentucky Fish & Wildlife, supported by two boats, and the Franklin County Sheriff's Office with a drone aided in the search and rescue operations. Search efforts were initially halted on Saturday due to severe weather conditions. However, teams resumed their search on Sunday, with assistance from the Lexington Fire Department. Stay tuned as LEX 18 will provide further updates as they emerge.
