Man gets probation for crash that killed retired priest in Wauwatosa
A 24-year-old man was sentenced to four years of probation Friday for a crash that killed a retired priest in Wauwatosa. Clay Schueffner was sentenced at Milwaukee County Courthouse for the Feb. 2024 death of 93-year-old Father David Gau outside St. Camillus at 103rd Street and Wisconsin Avenue.Schueffner pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent operation of a vehicle. Investigators said he was using Snapchat and not paying attention when he struck Gau, who was attempting to cross Wisconsin Avenue.During the sentencing hearing, prosecutors showed surveillance video of the crash. The video was frozen before impact.Prosecutor Ian Vance-Curzan addressed the court."What happened here was avoidable tragedy that had the smallest amount of patience been used where he didn't need to use his phone at the time he was driving down Wisconsin Avenue, Mr. Gau would not have died in the way you saw in that video," Vance-Curzan said.Schueffner also spoke during the hearing."I want you to know I would never intentionally cause harm to anyone and I am deeply sorry for what happened that day. It may feel like these are only words on a page but they come sincerely and wholeheartedly from me," Schueffner said.
