A man from Miami Beach has been charged with vessel homicide in connection to a fatal boat crash that occurred in the Florida Keys in November 2024. Reinaldo Aquit, 48, is accused of causing the death of Stephanie Rodriguez, a 28-year-old woman from Hialeah, while operating a 39-foot speedboat during a Poker Run event from Miami to Key West. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission stated that Aquit was driving recklessly at high speeds and disregarding navigational rules in the Calda Channel, resulting in the boat rolling and six passengers being ejected. Rodriguez tragically lost her life due to injuries sustained in the accident. Major Alberto Maza, South Bravo Regional Commander of the FWC, emphasized that this tragedy could have been prevented and expressed condolences to the loved ones of Ms. Rodriguez. Aquit is also facing multiple misdemeanor charges in connection to the incident.
