Man facing charges from fatal crash

MILAN TWP. — An Illinois man is facing two misdemeanors due to being the alleged at-fault driver in a crash in Milan Township on Wednesday that killed his passenger. The 31-year-old, from Burbank, is facing a second-degree misdemeanor charge of vehicular manslaughter and a minor misdemeanor count of failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign, according to Erie County Municipal Court records. Additionally, he has a hold for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. As of late Friday, he is held under a no-bond order in Erie County Jail. At about 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday, a Honda CR-V, operated by the Burbank man, was eastbound on Scheid Road and entered the intersection with Huron-Avery Road, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The Honda was struck by a southbound Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by an 18-year-old Norwalk man. The Honda was then struck by a northbound Lincoln MKZ operated by a 38-year-old Sandusky man. The Honda's front seat passenger, Luz Guillen, 74, of Chicago, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the release. The Lincoln's driver suffered minor injuries. The Honda's driver suffered serious injuries. Both were transported to Firelands Regional Medical Center. The 18-year-old also suffered minor injuries but declined to be transported to the hospital. The intersection of Scheid and Huron-Avery roads was closed for about two hours. Second-degree misdemeanors can be punished by up to one-and-a-half months in jail and up to a $750 fine.
