Lifeguard impaled by umbrella in freak beach accident

A lifeguard's relaxing day at the beach turned into a frightening ordeal when she was pierced by an umbrella stake. The incident occurred at Asbury Park's 3rd Avenue Beach, where emergency responders rushed to rescue a young woman who was trapped by the umbrella. Luckily, fellow lifeguards found her near the lifeguard stand with the stake through her shoulder and out the back of her arm. Fire Chief Kevin Keddy shared that the stake had to be removed for her transportation to the hospital. The victim remained conscious throughout the ordeal and was described as tough by Keddy. While her current condition is unknown, she appeared to be doing alright when she was being taken to the hospital. The cause of the incident was not determined, but Keddy advised ensuring that umbrella stakes are securely placed in the sand to prevent similar accidents. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has reported an increase in airborne beach umbrella incidents, highlighting the importance of properly anchoring umbrellas and being cautious of strong winds.
