Kahaluʻu car crash detours traffic for North Shore, east Oʻahu residents

HONOLULU (KHON2) -- Kamehameha Highway near Waihee Road was reopened, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation reported at 11:06 a.m. Residents on the coast may have been impacted by a morning car crash that occurred in the area. HDOT reported the incident through a social media post at 10 a.m. on May 17. Traffic is being detoured via Wailehua Road, Laumaula Road, and Pulama Road, DOT said. The route is a primary road along the windward coast that connects Kaneohe to Kahaluʻu and the North Shore, which means drivers may be turned around. On social media, drivers warned others of the traffic. "Anyone going Kaneohe bound, go ahead turn around. They closed down the road a little past Waikane due to a major head on collision and turned over vehicle. Was sitting in traffic for almost 30 minutes before it got posted," posted one user. "By Tang’s store in Kahalu’u! Road shutdown but seeing movement on getting the vehicles out of the way. So hopefully it’ll open soon," another user said. Kamehameha Highway is also fully closed in both directions at Waimea Bay on May 17 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Helicopter operations will drape netting over the slope for rockfall mitigation, DOT said. Emergency vehicles and TheBus will be allowed through the area. The department advised other drivers to use alternate routes. For more information, visit DOT's website.
