The Riverside County Sheriff's Department, as reported in a July 14 press release, determined that Sperbeck's death was an "unfortunate accident" with no evidence of criminal activity or intent. Therefore, no criminal charges will be filed, and the incident will be documented as an accidental death. Riverside Sheriff Chad Bianco confirmed that no criminal charges will be pursued, emphasizing that the incident was deemed a tragic accident with no criminal intent. Elway's attorney, Harvey Steinberg, expressed that his client was not to blame for the incident, and conveyed the sorrow surrounding the situation. The accident involving Elway and Sperbeck occurred as they were leaving a private resort in La Quinta, California.
