ISP: 6-year-old killed, 5 injured in southern Indiana crash; mother could face charges

A mother could be facing charges after her 6-year-old child was killed in a crash in southern Indiana Tuesday night.Austin police responded to State Road 256 and U.S. 31 around 8:42 p.m. Tuesday about a multi-vehicle crash.Indiana State Police said its preliminary investigation shows a car heading west on SR 256 had a green light when another vehicle, which had a red light, hit them. ISP said the car that ran the red light was speeding. The driver and passenger in the car that was hit were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive, police said. The woman driving the car at fault for the crash had her 6- and 2-year-old in the back seat. Police said the 6-year-old died, while the 2-year-old was taken to the hospital.Police have not released any other information about the 6-year-old who died. The mother and the passenger in the front of her car were also taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.ISP believes alcohol may have been a factor, but they are waiting for toxicology results. They are also working to determine if the 6-year-old child was properly secured."Our investigators will be looking at whether both children in the backseat were properly restrained," said ISP Sergeant Carey Huls. "There's also reason to believe that there was alcohol involved in the crash. So we're waiting on toxicology results to determine that specifically."Police say the mother could be facing charges, but nothing has been filed yet."Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family. This, you know, precious little girl, six years old, but we've got a lot of things we have to look through," Huls said. The Indiana Department of Child Services is conducting an investigation into the case as well.
