Iowa man pleads no contest in fatal DUI crash in Vero Beach

An Iowa man accused of driving under the influence that led to a death more than five years ago has avoided trial.According to court documents in Indian River County, Shane Russel Wilson accepted a plea deal by pleading no contest Monday to the charge of leaving the scene of an accident-causing death.The state attorney’s office for the 19th Judicial Circuit (Indian River, Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties) is seeking a 30-year prison sentence for Wilson.He is subject to a minimum of four years in Florida state prison.Your neighborhood: Local coverage from WPBF 25 NewsHis trial on charges of two counts of DUI damage to property and persons, DUI manslaughter and leaving the scene of an accident-causing death was scheduled to begin Monday morning in a Vero Beach courtroom.Court documents note Wilson is set for sentencing on June 12.WPBF 25 News contacted Wilson’s attorney for comment and is awaiting a response.According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Wilson, a resident of West Des Moines, was driving his Ford pickup truck and crashed into a home located on 2th Avenue SW in Vero Beach during the early morning hours of Feb. 27, 2021.Two people who were in the home were critically injured. The evening of Feb. 27, Maria Zeledon died from injuries sustained in the crash at HCA Lawnwood Hospital in Fort Pierce.Since the accident, Wilson was placed on house arrest in Iowa.
