Iowa Lakes shares update on baseball team injured in fatal crash
ESTHERVILLE, Iowa -- Officials with Iowa Lakes Community College shared an update on the staff and baseball players injured in a bus crash that claimed the life of one of their teammates. On February 12, the Iowa Lakes baseball team was traveling to Arkansas for a game against North Arkansas College when its charter bus crashed into a ditch along Highway 4 near the Twin Lakes area. All of the 33 people on board suffered varying degrees of injuries. One of the players, 19-year-old freshman Carter (Tater) Johnson, died from his injuries. In a statement released on Friday, school officials said one athlete and the bus driver remain hospitalized. The other students and staff are continuing to recover. Officials also expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support in the days following the crash. An Iowa State Patrol crash report said the bus was traveling southbound on the highway when the driver, who remains unidentified, failed to negotiate the curve and overcorrected, causing the bus to roll into the ditch. There have been four fatalities at the same curve on the highway in the last 10 years. The ISP said the investigation into the crash is ongoing.
