I-35 Section Shut Down, Police React to 14-Car Collision
The Iowa State Patrol recently responded to a massive 14-vehicle collision in northern Iowa, prompting authorities to encourage people to stay indoors. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office alerted of a multiple-vehicle crash that obstructed the northbound lanes of Interstate 35 near mile marker 142 on Sunday afternoon. Subsequent video footage from an Iowa DOT 511 Traffic Camera captured blizzard-like conditions as emergency crews worked to clear the wreckage. The Iowa State Patrol shared a video emphasizing the hazardous conditions and urging drivers to avoid taking alternate routes due to the severity of the situation. Throughout Sunday, the Iowa State Patrol was inundated with 158 calls for assistance and provided aid to 127 stranded motorists between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. By 7:37 p.m., the Iowa DOT reported that many roads across the state were partially covered in snow, with a section of I-35 between Ames and Mason City considered impassable and neighboring areas deemed unsafe for travel. The closure on I-35 was extended to the Minnesota border from Exit 111 at U.S. 30 in Ames as of 7 p.m.
