Granville teen dies during motocross practice

BROOKFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A teenager from Granville died after crashing on a motocross track during practice in Brookfield. On April 28th, members of the West Brookfield Rescue Squad were called to Brookfield for a report of a dirt bike accident. The victim was flown to UMass Memorial Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. The motocross organization, NESC, stated on social media Thursday that 17-year-old Alex Mechachonis of Granville died after crashing during a practice track. NESC says that Alex has been racing since 2022 and has had great success in racing, including three championships in the 2025 NESC Spring series. A GoFundMe was created to support his family, with over $35,000 raised so far. "We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Alex Mechachonis, a passionate dirt bike racer, friend, and loved member of the community. Alex brought energy, kindness, and dedication to everything he did, and his loss is deeply felt by everyone who knew him," the organizer stated on GoFundMe. 22News contacted the Brookfield Police Department and the Worcester County District Attorney's Office for additional details and has not yet heard back.
