Grandson of Mike Krzyzewski accused in DWI crash that killed 15-year-old on e-bike

DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — The grandson of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has been charged in connection with a crash that killed a teen riding an electric bike Saturday night in Durham. New information from the Durham Police Department in a news release said a 15-year-old boy was hit by an SUV just before 9 p.m. at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and Wyndham Lane. Officers determined through their investigation that the boy was traveling northwest on Cole Mill Road when he entered the path of a Ford Explorer going in the same direction. "The juvenile was struck by the vehicle," the news release said, "and pronounced deceased at the scene." The news release said Joseph Savarino, 26, of Durham, was charged with driving while impaired. According to court records, Savarino admitted to police he was drinking prior to being on the road. Court records said he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.11 when he took the breathalyzer test. Savarino is out on bond at $100,000 after his attorney appeared in court on Monday, according to court records. He is the grandson of former Duke men's basketball head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who retired in 2022. Nearly five years ago, Krzyzewski's other grandson — Michael Savarino — was charged with a DWI, driving after consuming while under 21 and a stop sign violation after a traffic stop in November 2021 on Brushy Creek Road outside of Hillsborough. The Durham Police Department said the investigation into Saturday night's fatal collision remains ongoing.
