Grand jury declines to indict woman in fatal crash
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) -- A grand jury has declined to indict a woman in the death of another woman following a crash earlier this year in El Paso's Lower Valley. As we previously reported, on Feb. 7, El Paso Police say that 57-year-old Ana Paniagua was hit and killed by a truck in the Lower Valley as she was helping a woman she had stopped to help, offering her ride. Authorities initially charged 62-year-old Aurora Morales with intoxication manslaughter in connection with the incident. Police say they were switching seats at the time of the incident. The truck rolled back and hit Paniagua. She later died. Court records show Morales was released on a surety bond on Feb. 19 and a court motion was made a few days later to dismiss the case. In official statement, District Attorney James Montoya said: "Under Texas law, a grand jury must return an indictment to proceed with a felony criminal case. While Ms. Paniagua's death is a tragedy, all of the facts and circumstances of the incident were presented to an El Paso County grand jury, which declined to return any criminal charges against Ms. Morales."
