Frightening video: Person hospitalized after wild crash into North Hills tamale stand

A wild crash in North Hills sent a truck spinning out of control, slamming into a person in a wheelchair right in front of a street vendor. One person was sent to the hospital, and it was all caught on camera. It happened at 10:04 a.m. on the 15000 block of Nordhoff Street, near the 405 Freeway, according to the LAPD. The cross street is Orion Avenue, which is controlled only by stop signs. Getting all the way across Nordhoff Street safely is quite the challenge, and someone failed to do so Friday morning. Dash cam footage captured the catastrophic chain-reaction car crash. A driver was seen trying to cut across the street, darting into moving traffic, then slamming into a pickup truck, which then spins out of control, catapulting a person in a wheelchair into a tamale stand on the sidewalk in front of a 7-Eleven store. Food and debris went flying in all directions. People who work at the 7-Eleven strip mall said the person injured is a man in his 50s who frequents the location. He was badly injured but survived the crash. Police and paramedics arrived quickly and rushed him to the hospital. KTLA was told the tamale vendor, a woman, was deeply traumatized but physically unharmed, despite previous reports that she was also injured. People KTLA spoke with who live and work in this neighborhood say the intersection is extremely dangerous and believe stop signs are simply not enough to control the flow of traffic. They want traffic lights installed at the intersection instead. Police are investigating the incident, and no further details are available at this time.
