Fremont man wins huge lottery prize

FREMONT — A man who is lucky to be alive after a freak July 4 incident years ago is now several hundred thousand dollars richer after buying a winning Ohio Lottery scratch-off ticket. The man, identified only by his first name, Duane, bought a Money, Money, Money scratch-off lottery ticket after work at a gas station in the 800 block of State Street in Fremont. He played the ticket, worth $10, when he returned home and revealed a $500,000 win. "I looked at it for a long time," he said. "At first, I thought something was wrong." Eventually, he realized what had happened and immediately put the ticket in his safe. Several years ago, Duane and his then 18-month-old daughter were struck by an antique tow truck during a July 4 parade. He suffered devastating injuries and had several heart attacks, according to the Ohio Lottery. He lost his job, and his family faced dire financial straits. While the family struggled, Duane was always thankful that he survived the crash. He said that so many people have helped him throughout the years that he is looking forward to finally being able to return the favor. After 26.75% mandatory federal and state taxes, he will receive about about $366,000. He plans to purchase a new vehicle, help out a few of his close friends, take a family vacation and invest the rest. As of late Thursday, four of the game's top prizes remain unclaimed.
