Freightliner strikes, kills 1-year-old child on NC-42 in Wilson County: NCSHP

WILSON, N.C. (WNCN) — A portion of N.C. Highway 42 near Sadie Road in Wilson County was closed Tuesday night after a heavy-duty truck struck a 1-year-old child, authorities told CBS 17. A real-time traffic map from the North Carolina Department of Transportation showed that a crash happened just after 8:10 p.m. along NC-42 just past the Sadie Road intersection. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded shortly afterward to the scene just west of the Wilson city limits. Troopers said a white 2019 Freightliner was traveling east on NC-42 when it hit a one-year-old walking in the same lane. The heavy-duty truck came to a stop in the area of the collision. Troopers said the toddler was pronounced dead at the scene. "The driver of the Freightliner is showing to have no contributing circumstances in this collision," troopers said. "There are no charges at this time." According to NCDOT, both directions of the road were closed until 11 p.m. Tuesday.
