Four injured in early-morning Verona accident

VERONA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- A three-car accident in Verona sent four people to the hospital and set a car on fire early Wednesday morning, according to Oneida County Sheriffs. Officers were called to the accident on Rome New London Road at approximately 4:30 am on Wednesday, April 15. Further investigation found that the first vehicle -- driven by 49-year-old Gary Wilson of Oneida -- was traveling southbound when colliding head-on with a truck. That truck was driven by 27-year-old Ben Irwin of Cicero. Wilson's car caught on fire as a result of the collision. Bystanders were able to take Wilson and a 17-year-old passenger out of the vehicle before the vehicle was completely engulfed. In total, four people were transported to local hospitals; three of them were transported to the Wynn Hospital in Utica, while another was transported to Rome Health. Sheriffs have said that none of the four people hospitalized has life-threatening injuries. Rome New London Road was shut down for approximately two hours as crews cleaned up the accident. The accident remains under investigation. Oneida County Sheriffs were assisted on the scene by the fire departments of New London and Verona, AmCare Ambulance of Rome, the New York State Police and bystanders on the scene. This is an ongoing investigation. Eyewitness News and CNYHomepage.com will provide more information as it becomes available to us.
