Firetruck blocking traffic in Rockcastle County hit by car amid collision response
BRODHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) — A firetruck in Brodhead responding to a highway injury accident on Memorial Day was hit by a vehicle while trying to block the scene of the crash. On May 25, the Brodhead Fire Department posted on Facebook that first responders had initially been sent to the 69.8-mile marker of I-75 North in Rockcastle County. First responders positioned a firetruck to warn drivers of the crash and protect others. Authorities said Command 12 had been in position "well in advance" of a second crash that took place as crews were operating the scene. "A passenger vehicle failed to move over and struck Engine 11 on the driver’s side," Brodhead fire officials wrote on Monday. "As a result of the collision, one Brodhead firefighter was transported from the scene to Saint Joseph Berea for evaluation and has since been treated and released. The occupant of the passenger vehicle refused treatment and transport at the scene." Fire department leaders said the Kentucky State Police Post 11 was investigating both crashes. Members reminded the community that Kentucky's Slow Down, Move Over Law was in place to protect emergency responders, tow operators, highway workers, and drivers in general. "When you see emergency vehicles with lights activated, slow down and move over," Brodhead fire officials said. "If you cannot safely move over, reduce your speed and proceed with extreme caution. Thankfully, today’s incident did not result in more serious injuries."
